With beaches on Hong Kong Island, the New Territories, and on outlying islands including Lamma and Lantau, there are plenty of locations where you can indulge your passion for water sports in the territory.
If you want to surf, then hire boards and wetsuits at Big Wave Bay on Hong Kong Island, which has gentle waves suitable for beginners. Further afield, there’s another Big Wave Bay in Sai Kung, where the waves can reach up to eight feet. You’ll likely have the beach to yourself, as it’s only accessible by water taxi from Sai Kung Pier. Just watch out for rip currents.
If you want to try wake surfing, where you ride the waves of a boat’s wake, head over to Tai Tam, which offers experienced drivers and coaches. For windsurfing, and wakeboarding, head to Stanley Main Beach, where several companies offer activities including kayaking and stand up paddle board tours along the Stanley Peninsula.
Hiring a traditional junk boat for an afternoon or whole day with a group of friends is another popular Hong Kong activity and a good way to explore outlying islands like Lamma and Po Toi. Many trips offer a stop-off for a seafood meal and a pause for swimming and snorkelling. You can book junk boats for parties of up to 40 people, and some offer free flow beer and wine, and equipment like stand-up paddleboards included as part of the package.
